Signing the MOU

Signing the MOU

Sprix Inc. (Headquarters: Toshima-ku, Tokyo / CEO: Hiroyuki Tsuneishi, hereinafter "Sprix") has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Education and Sports (hereinafter "MOE") of the Republic of Uganda (hereinafter "Uganda"). Under this agreement, Sprix will partner with the MOE and the Burgess Foundation, a local NGO supporting education, to provide the Test of Fundamental Academic Skills (TOFAS) to public and private schools throughout Uganda, aiming for widespread implementation. The Ugandan Ministry of Education faces challenges in children's basic academic skills. By utilizing TOFAS, Sprix plans to accurately assess academic ability and focus on developing fundamental academic skills..

In February 2024, a signing ceremony was held in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, between Watanabe of Sprix's Overseas Business Division and Ketty Ramaro, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education. The ceremony was attended by approximately 10 people, including Mulindwa Ismael, Director General of the Basic and Secondary Education Bureau of the Ministry of Education. It was confirmed that the Ministry of Education and Sprix will work together to encourage public and private schools across the country to take the TOFAS exam.

Meeting at Nyakatsiro Health Centre

Burgess Foundation held a meeting at Nyakatsiro health centre where challenges were raised majorly poor feeding, inability to pay bills which results into elder abandonment at the health centre for days.

During the meeting, we identified several key issues affecting elderly care in the district and proposed solutions including community support programs and fundraising initiatives to help cover medical bills.

Reusable Sanitary Pads Project

Our CEO Stella Kyobutungi joined #TeamMitooma to see the progress of the project for making Reusable sanitary pads. In a span of 1 week 39 girls had been trained and more girls in the area had expressed interest in learning.

The project has been so successful that we're now planning to expand it to three additional districts. The reusable pads provide an affordable and sustainable solution for menstrual hygiene management.

Hygiene training

Book Donation Handover

The books raised from the #buyabook fundraiser were handed over to the PTA chairman, Head teacher and his Deputy at Nyakashojwa PS, Mitooma District. Burgess Foundation Team conducted a training in Menstrual Hygiene at Nyakashojwa Primary School.

This donation included 500 textbooks and 200 storybooks that will help improve literacy rates in the school. The head teacher expressed gratitude for the donation which will benefit over 300 students.

NGO meeting

Meeting with Mitooma District NGO Committee

A meeting with the Mitooma District NGO Monitoring Committee. The committee members pledged to support Burgess Foundation in identifying vulnerable communities that need support.

This collaboration will help us better target our programs to reach those most in need. The committee provided valuable insights into community needs and helped us identify potential local partners.

Community outreach

Tailor Trained in Pad Making

A tailor from our community was trained in making the pads. She committed to making 30 pads for donation to girls and women in Mitooma District.

This skills transfer is part of our sustainability strategy, ensuring that the community can continue producing pads even after our project ends. The tailor will also train other women in the community.

Youth training

Community Engagement in Menstrual Hygiene

Today, Burgess Foundation conducted a community engagement activity in Menstrual Hygiene Management and training on how to make Reusable Sanitary Pads. In Kampala District.

The event attracted over 150 participants including parents, teachers and local leaders. We discussed breaking taboos around menstruation and creating supportive environments for girls.

Elderly support

Training in Reusable Sanitary Pads

Burgess Foundation is undertaking a training in making Reusable Sanitary Pads(RUSPs) This intervention is one of many that the foundation is undertaking towards improving menstrual hygiene. #menstrualhealth

The training program has been expanded to include business skills, enabling participants to turn their new skills into income-generating activities. Several participants have already started small businesses.

School supplies

Trainings in Soap and Book Making

A team from Burgess Foundation undertook trainings in Soap and Book Making under the sustainability programme. This programme aims to equip community members with skills for income generation.

Participants learned how to make high-quality liquid soap and basic book binding techniques. The skills gained will help them start small businesses to support their families.
